leadmarker Called the "undisputed queen of violin-playing," German-born Anne-Sophie Mutter plays her Kansas City recital debut on Friday, April 11, at 8 p.m., in the downtown Folly Theater (12th and Central Sts). This Harriman-Jewell Series presentation will feature the three violin sonatas by Johannes Brahms. Lambert Orkis, Mutter's longtime collaborator and pianist, plays for the recital.

For three decades, Anne-Sophie Mutter has been one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time. Born in Rheinfelden in the state of Baden, the violinist launched her international career at the Lucerne Festival in 1976. A year later she performed as a soloist at the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Since then Anne-Sophie Mutter has performed concerts in all the major music centers of Europe, the United States, and Asia.

At the Lucerne Festival in August 2007, Mutter gave the world premiere performance of a violin concerto by Sofia Gubaidulina performed together with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. She will record the concerto in 2008 with the London Symphony led by Valery Gergiev.

Mutter’s current concert repertoire includes nine concertos plus Romances by Beethoven and Nocturnes by Dutilleux and all of the Mozart Concerti. In the 2007-2008 season, she appears with the Dresden, Toronto, and Philadelphia Orchestras, the London Symphony, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, and Leipzig Gewandhaus, under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach, André Previn, Seiji Ozawa, and Kurt Masur.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s tour calendar lists stops throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. In March, she performed the Beethoven Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic and Seiji Ozawa in the Herbert von Karajan Memorial Concert in Salzburg. Mutter is currently on a North American recital tour, playing the three Brahms violin sonatas. Anne-Sophie Mutter will tour Asia in May and June, leading and playing solos in Vivaldi's Four Seasons and J.S. Bach's E major violin concerto.

Her upcoming CD release will be the Bach Concerti with the Trondheim Soloists on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Mutter will also record Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with Leipzig Gewandhaus and Kurt Masur, Mendelssohn's F Major Violin Sonata with Lambert Orkis, and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio with Sir André Previn and Lynn Harrell—all for the bicentennial birthday of the composer.

The honors awarded to Mutter for her many recordings include the German Record Prize, the Record Academy Prize, the Grand Prix du Disque, the International Record Prize, “Le Monde de la Musique,” “Record Geijutsu,” and several Grammy awards.

Tickets to Anne-Sophie Mutter's Kansas City recital debut are $25 or $55; please call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521). Tickets and event information are also available at www.harriman-jewell.org. This event is sponsored by The Curry Family Foundation.

Now in its 43rd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, educational events offer free master classes and lectures to allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting.
