The Harriman-Jewell Series will
present the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Alexei Kornienko, at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Folly
Theater (12th
and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City. Previously presented in 1999 by the Harriman-Jewell Series, the Orchestra will return to play an all-Tchaikovsky program that will include the 19th-century Russian composer's Polonaise from the opera Eugene Onegin; Suite No. 4, Op. 61, "Mozartiana"; and Symphony No. 3 in D, Op. 29, "Polish".
The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978 through an initiative to broadcast the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries throughout Russia. The Orchestra expanded its activities into Russian television, including projects with Korean KBC and German ZDF. In 1980, the Orchestra created a subscription series in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The Orchestra's “Young Stars of Russia” concerts and “Music Has No Borders” concerts (with the participation of foreign musicians and conductors) are broadcast on radio.
In 2005, Alexei Kornienko was engaged as the music director of the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra. In recent years, his activity as a highly sought-after conductor in Europe and around the world has increased exponentially. Not only is Kornienko known as a member of the elite “middle generation” of Russia’s great conductors, but his skill and ability in interpreting contemporary scores is praised throughout the world of classical music.
From 1995 through 2006, the Orchestra issued 32 CDs with Mediafon Hanssler, Santec Music and other firms. In addition to the Orchestra’s extensive work for television, radio, and film soundtracks, the Orchestra has performed at the Kremlin Palace with the Moscow Classical Ballet in performance of The Nutcracker, Giselle, Don Quixote, Cinderella, and Firebird.
