Virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin will perform a recital
on Friday,
February 19, at 8 p.m. at the Folly
Theater (12th
and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City. The
acclaimed pianist has selected
a program that includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Liszt, Fauré, and Charles-Valentin Alkan. The recital will mark Hamelin's first appearance on the Harriman-Jewell Series.
The Canadian-born pianist is known worldwide for the originality and
technical brilliance of his performances. The New Yorker's Alex Ross wrote that "Hamelin's legend will grow—right now there is no one like him." Under exclusive contract with Hyperion Records, he has received eight Grammy nominations and has recorded more than 35 CDs. His recordings include an astounding breadth of compositions. A matchless explorer
of unfamiliar pianistic terrain, Hamelin has achieved highly regarded positions and awards. He was recently presented with a rarely bestowed lifetime achievement prize by the German Record Critic’s Award. Marc-André Hamelin was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 and a Chevalier
de l’Ordre du Québec in 2004. Also, he holds position as a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
Hamelin earned his bachelor's and master's of music degrees from Temple University in Philadelphia and currently lives in Boston. His appreciation for jazz music gave rise to his Grammy-nominated CD Marc-André Hamelin in a State of Jazz.
